I know that this won’t come as a shock to many people, I love to kiteboard…
So… Glendinning Insurance Services is sponsoring this outstanding young man, Tayne Steven, who is working hard to make it into the first Kiteboarding competition in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Kiteboarding is one of the fastest growing sports of all the sailing disciplines.
Although Tayne has been training for many disciplines of kiting, the Olympics has allowed Foiling. Kiters who are on a foil can reach speeds of up to 33.4 knots or 61 kms per hour.
Tayne Steven, who is from Rossland, BC, is only 17 years old and has been training in La Ventana Mexico as part of the Red Mountain Academy in the winter. His coach is Xantos Villegas who was ranked #8 in the world.
Tayne has competed in one major international event (Hydro Foil Pro Tour) prior to all events being cancelled due to Covid.
He will be travelling to Kingston Ontario to participate in the Fork Hydrofoil Kite Regatta (October 2nd to 4th). This is an exciting race for him, not only because all of the major races have been cancelled this summer, but also as it will be closely watched by the Sail Canada National coaches.

I remember a couple years ago when Tayne and I went out foiling, in Mexico, on a day that they were Foil Racing. These kiters come from all over the world to race. His Dad reminded Tayne to stay close to shore so he wouldn’t get in the middle of the race. The foils have lazer sharp carbon under the water and they go fast. Guess where Tayne ended up??? Right in the middle of it all. Tayne is also bilingual, and his Dad asked him upon returning to shore, How that went? (insert sarcastic tone… lol) Tayne said, he learnt some French words that they don’t teach in school… lol
