Since we live in such a beautiful part of the world, it attracts above average health care professionals. I would like to introduce you to Dr. Lisa Keen, ND, I met her in my BNI group. I have been working with her on a few areas that I would like to have a better understanding. She has provided me with great advise and alternate treatments. Since I have been writing on Mental Illness, I asked if she would write me an article that spoke to this.
Mental health problems are incredibly common and very much on the rise in our society today. There are many contributing factors to mental health and mental illness, including your physical environment, chemical environment, genes, mind frame and sensory inputs. Understanding all of these components, as a whole and optimizing our adaptive capacity to each of them will help restore balance between mind and body.
Getting the proper diagnosis is key to developing an effective treatment plan, especially with mental illness. Naturopathic Medicine offers a wonderful complementary approach to health and wellness in conjunction with working with your medical doctor, psychologist/psychiatrist and other health care practitioners.
Naturopathic Medicine can offer specific nutritional therapy, depending on biochemical imbalances. This can include either an excess or deficiency in vitamins, minerals, hormones or neurotransmitters. Naturopathic Doctors can also look at food sensitivities or intolerances, blood-sugar problems, inflammation, or heavy metal toxicity, which can influence mental health.
