When we entered into Express Scripts Facility, they called it a research facility. The question I quietly asked myself, what the heck are they researching??? Don’t you just pay the claim or issue the drugs that are prescribed. Was I in for a surprise!!!
They just gave me the tip of the iceberg and I am going to give you one piece of that.
Have you heard me mention a little something called, “Adherence”? When I left the research facility I had a basic understanding on why Adherence is so important to long term health.
Express Scripts has been working in the US with an app called “Mango Health”. They use the term Glamification, to help people adhere to their medication and maintain healthy habits. He showcased the Mango Health app, which reminds patients when it’s time to take their medication and records each dose. It also automatically alerts users to potentially dangerous interactions between medications and supplements, or with food and drink. Mark explained some of the human psychology built into the game (e.g. loss aversion) and said the game component sets the app apart—it’s fun, engaging, exciting, and motivating, thanks to the ability for users to earn points which turn into prizes for staying on track. Express Scripts has made a financial investment in Mango Health.
We are checking what the adherence rate of the sample group that used the Mango Health app, but I believe it was in the 90%. I will confirm it in a future article.
I have gone to appointments with people who have had difficult news to digest. When I go, I take notes and if I don’t understand, I will ask the Doctor to repeat what they said to make sure I have it correct. It amazes me when we get home and discuss what the Doctor said, how the perception of what we heard changes what was actually said. To have an app at your fingertips that not only helps with your prescription but nudges you on potentially dangerous interactions is an amazing tool.
