The reason I enjoy my job so much is I get to help people. As I might of mentioned more then once, selling insurance is such a small part of what I do. My job really begins when a person needs to use the product I sold them.
Just recently I have been trying to help a person and their family who is incapable of giving clear direction of their wishes. When they were healthy they did not set up a Power of Attorney, and 4 months later the family still does not have Power of Attorney. Full recovery is not in the near future. This person is young and the situation was not expected, but they rarely are anticipated.
The ramifications of not having a Power of Attorney is far reaching and affects areas I never would of thought of.
What does that mean? These are just a couple of the areas that have been affected:
- There income has stopped, because they are unable to work;
- there is no income replacement, because the person insured is incapable of signing documents, so they have not been able to apply for the benefits;
- even if they received the income replacement benefit, they have no legal access to the bank account or any savings;
- their car had to be returned;
- thank goodness they rented; if there was a mortgage the house would of been lost, unless the Family could afford the mortgage;
- they would be incapable of selling any of the assets.
My hope by writing this Blog is if you have been putting off getting a Power of Attorney or changing who your Power of Attorney is, you will make an appointment this week and get your affairs in order.
