Empire Life uses Express Scripts to pay and manage their prescription drug claims. They have pharmacists who specialize in illnesses and the prescriptions within each of these illnesses. We spoke with a diabetic pharmacist and her mandate is to speak with approximately 8 claimants a day aimed at boosting adherence, saving money, and promoting better health outcomes. They are focused solely on patient coaching and follow up, using a technique called motivational interviewing to build engagement.
One patient she told us about is on a diabetic prescription and it gave him diarrhea. This patient could barely leave the house because of it and on several occasions was not able to find a facility in time. This made it almost impossible for him to work, since he had to visit different work sites. She was able to contact the patients Doctor and recommend a change to one prescription and he was a new man. We asked how are the recommendations received from the physicians and she said that she has never come across a physician that would not work with her. The physicians were normally very thankful for her assistance.
There are pharmacists that work for Express Scripts in several of the major illnesses, such as Crohn’s, Arthritis, Cancer, etc.
