Understanding Suicide Attempts and your Insurance – AD&D

Suicide

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) defines “Accident” means a single, sudden, violent, unintended, unexpected, external event that causes a Loss of independent of any other cause.

Under the AD&D “Exclusions” in Empire Life’s contract, reads:

“The benefits of this provision would not be payable if the Loss results directly or indirectly from:

a) suicide, attempted suicide, or intentional self-inflicted injury;”

If a suicide is considered an illness, then it would not fall under the definition of Accident.  Similar to having a Heart Attack, it can happen suddenly but would be classified as an illness.
