Illness or Accident, When Do They Stop Being an Employee?

Without a doubt this is one of the most asked questions I receive.  I’m not a Human Resources specialist, so this is when I recommend my clients contact Tanja Halsall, owner of Potentia HR.

This Blog is not saying that you shouldn’t engage Tanja on this question, just that Sun Life is giving you some guidance through their Employee Benefits contract.

Sun Life’s newest Focus Update is providing clarity on the following areas of their contract:

What is the Continuation Of Coverage (COC) provision?

The COC provision allows your Clients to continue coverage for their plan members that are
not “actively at work”. Examples of this include:

  • Statutory leaves
  • Personal leaves of absence
  • Statutory notice periods following termination of employment
  • This provision also allows your Clients to continue coverage for their plan members who
aren’t working because of an illness. These plan members may or may not be on an
    approved disability claim.

The second part of the Focus Update is a spreadsheet that lays out “When to end plan member’s coverage”.  I would recommend keeping this spreadsheet close at hand or you can always search my Blogs to find it.

If you would like to work with a Broker who has you and your disabled employee(s) best interest, contact Glendinning Insurance Services.
